"What are the duties of priesthood holders?" Lesson Help

Here is an outline of what I did for the lesson that goes with
"What are the duties of priesthood holders?" Lesson.

from "Come, Follow Me"

1. Have the girls name all the Priesthood duties they see performed at church and in life in general.  You can make a web of their responses on the chalkboard.

   2. Then, using different colors to represent: deacon, teacher, priest, and Melchizedek Priesthood, have them circle the duty for a particular priesthood office.  For example, if a girl was given deacon she would circle all the duties listed that a deacon does.  I used sidewalk chalk so we would have a different color per office.  When doing this activity they noticed how "it's like a ladder" -quote from one of my YW.  You build upon it.  A Priest can do what a teacher and deacon does.  A teacher can do what a deacon can....etc.  So, they noticed that the things that a deacon does can be also done by all the other offices.
   
   
   
   Girls can use colored pencils, markers, highlighters, crayons, etc...

    3.  Then, we applied what we learned.  I had post it notes with deacon, teacher, priest, and Melchizedek Priesthood holder written on them.  I put a post it note on their backs.  Then, they went around the room only asking Yes/No questions to try to figure out what priesthood office was on their back.  For example, let's pretend you had "teacher" on your back. You asked "Can I pass the sacrament", "yes".  "Can I prepare the sacrament", "yes".  "Can I bless the sacrament", "no".  Then, you come to me and ask: "Am I a teacher?", "yes".  I had the girls ask others so they are practicing what they just learned.  Then, come to me to see what they were.  Of course, I had girls that just wanted to ask "am I a deacon", "no".  "am I a priest", "no".  etc.... Umm... yeah, you can't do that. :)
   
   
   
   
   
   
   4.  Then, this was awesome.  I had all the girls that were "deacons" go to one spot of the room. All the "teachers" go to another, etc....Then, these were the groups for the next activity. :)  No picking your group- love it!  Then, I did this point from the lesson:

Divide the class into three groups. Assign each group one of the first three sets of scriptures suggested in this outline, and ask them to look for the duties of priesthood holders in those scriptures. Have each group find a picture in the Gospel Art Book that illustrates the priesthood duty they read about. Invite them to share with the class the picture, a scripture, and a personal experience in which they have observed priesthood holders fulfilling this duty. 

           Yes, If you did your math right I had 4 groups instead of 3 because I have 12 beehives!  Yes, 12! 

These were the scriptures suggested in the outline:

Matthew 3:1–6; 28:19–20; John 15:16 (Priesthood holders invite all to come unto Christ)

Acts 3:1–8; James 5:14–15 (Priesthood holders serve others)

3 Nephi 11:21-22; 12:1–2; 17:6–18; 18:1–12 (Christ gave an example of priesthood service)

I just divided up the third one giving one group the ones from chapters 11 & 12.  And the other group the ones from 17 & 18.  This made one be about baptism and the other healing the sick and sacrament.

5.  So, each group got a set of the scripture.  They read them.  Then, each member of the group needed to do one of the following: One needed to find a picture in the Gospel Art Book that represented their set of scriptures.  One needed to find one scripture to share that summed it up well.  And another would share a personal experience.  { I put the above paper on the board so they would remember easier}

 I brought my gospel art kit that I tore out of the spiral binding and placed in page protectors.  That way it was easier for one of them to just take the picture they wanted out of the binder and use it.  I use this binder for FHE at home too.

6. Then, each group got up and shared.  We ran out of time because opening exercises went long.  So the groups will finish presenting next week. :)  

The way our ward does it is I teach for a month, the other advisor teaches for a month. etc...  That way we focus on one topic for the whole month and can roll over activities/lessons if we want.

Chewy Chocolate Chip Pudding Cookies

These cookies are THE best!!

 Seriously.  This recipe has been my go to Chocolate Chip Cookie recipe for over 10 years now.  

I've been asked for this recipe more times than I can remember. 

So, here it is for everyone to enjoy.

Some tips:

-make sure the butter is softened

- make sure to gradually add the flour (keep the mixer going)

- We like ours with Ghirardelli Milk Chocolate Chips

- do not overbake

Chocolate Chip Pudding Cookies!

3 1/3 cup unsifted all-purpose flour.

1 ½ teaspoons baking soda

1 ½ cups butter or margarine, softened

1 cup firmly packed light brown sugar

½ cup granulated sugar

1 package (6-serving size) JELL-O® Brand Butter Pecan,

Chocolate, Chocolate Fudge, or Vanilla Flavor instant

pudding and pie filling.  (I use vanilla)

1 ½ teaspoons vanilla

3 eggs

3 cups chocolate chips

1 ½ cups chopped nuts (optional)

1.    Mix flour with baking soda in a separate bowl.

2.   Combine butter, the sugars, pudding mix, and vanilla in a large mixer bowl; beat until smooth and creamy.

3.   Beat in eggs.

4.   Gradually add flour mixture; then stir in chips and nuts. Batter with be stiff.

5.   Drop by rounded measuring teaspoonfuls onto ungreased baking sheets, about 2 inches apart.

6.   Bake at 375° for 8 to 10 minutes.  Makes about 6 dozen.

Dora Birthday Party

My little girl turned two and she is obsessed with Dora!

So, of course we had to have a Dora party!
It's so hot here in Arizona so I had to make sure it involved getting wet somehow.
So, this is what we did!

I ordered them it Etsy ($6.99) and printed the invites for .13 cents each at Costco.

Catching Explorer Stars Game:

I made this game like a game we played at Thanksgiving.  We hid the Explorer Stars around the yard.  The kids each got a game sheet and star stickers.  They had to go around the yard and find the stars.  When they found them they put a star on their sheet.

 Going on an Explorer Adventure:

Macy LOVES Dora.  She watches an episode at least every day. And if you haven't seen the show, Dora goes on an adventure to save or rescue something.  So, Swiper took Macy's birthday pinata and we were going on an adventure to get it back. :)

The Map

We had to go to Crocodile Lake, Bubble Bridge, and Rainbow Falls.

I just printed and laminated these crocs.

The kids had to get through the lake without them touching them.

{well that was the idea but I couldn't talk (literally!  I lost my voice the day before) to tell them so we just sprayed them in the pool}

The little girls just wanted to stay at this part forever. :)

 Then, when we got to Rainbow Falls Swiper was there!

 So, we threw water balloons at him!

 Always a favorite game.  I just drew and laminated Swiper.

 Rainbow Falls:

Rainbow Falls were all these water balloons hanging from the trees.

I saw these here on pinterest and thought those would be fun.  They are called water pinatas.

You can hit them and they explode on you or just pop them with a tack.

I just used water balloons and yarn.  They stayed up just fine.

 Then, just past Rainbow Falls was the pinata!

They broke the pinata and there was candy everywhere!

Catching Stars Game

Such a fun game!  You can use this to practice colors or review the star shape!  I made up this game for my daughter's 2nd birthday party.  The theme was Dora.  But, I've since used it as a preschool game too when our shape of the week is a star.

Kids love it and want to play again and again. :)

Hide the stars in the backyard, playground, or inside the house.

I just printed my pages.  Cut out the stars and laminated everything.

Even the sheets.  You can buy star stickers at Wal-mart.  They are only a $1 for 100 stars. 

I laminated the sheets too so I only have to peel off the stickers and they can start again.

I've even played this without the sheets, just the stars.

Great color review game too.  Have them tell you the color when they turn them into you or what colors to still look for.  Or print multiple stars and tell one kid they only get the green stars, another kid only gets the pink stars, etc...

Yummy Mint Ice Cream Cake

This is one of my most favorite desserts EVER.

I used to request this Ice Cream cake every birthday.

We call it "Grasshopper Cake" but usually people think that sounds gross.  But, not really.  It's like those mint grasshopper cookies they sell in the store.

Anyways, my son wanted a green Hulk Smash Ice Cream cake for his birthday.

So... of course I was more than happy to make this one. :)

This will make a 13x9 size cake:

2 cartons of Mint Chocolate Chip Iceream {you will use about 1.5 of it}

Package of Oreos

Hot Fudge

First, I take the Oreos and put them in a gallon sized storage bag. 

Then, I use my rolling pin to crush them.

Next, I dump enough to cover the bottom of the pan. 

Make sure you reserve some of the Oreo crumbs for the top of the cake.

Next, apply the Hot Fudge.

While I'm crushing the Oreos, I heat up a pot of water on the stove with the Jar inside.

Make sure you take off or loosen the lid!

You don't want Hot Fudge to explode all over your kitchen! ;)

Heat the Fudge to where the consistency is like the above pic.  Nice and runny.

Drizzle the Hot Fudge over the layer of Oreos you put at the bottom of the pan.

Yum!

Next comes the thick layer of ice cream.

Make sure you have left the ice cream out to melt a little so it's nice and soft, easy to smooth out.

Just put spoonfuls of it on the Oreo layer and smooth it out until it looks like below.

Then add some more crushed Oreos on top.  Drizzle some more hot fudge on top.

It's done.  Simple and yummy!

I put aluminum foil on top and put it back in the freezer for a couple hours before serving.

And this is what I did for my son's Hulk cake. 

Just stuck his Hulk {with washed feet} on top.  Looked and tasted great!
