Color Sort Tubes

Color Sort Tubes!!
Have you seen these tubes?  They sell them at a harware store, used to keep nuts and bolts inside.
They only had these colors when I went.  I don't know where my yellow one ran off to... I will need to find that one.  But these are great to use for a color sort game!

I just put an assortment of colored things in a pencil box.

The kids pinch the sides on the top and put the items inside.
{this can be a little hard for the younger ones}

So fun learning our colors!

Playschool: Rainbow of Colors!

Our Playschool Theme this week was~ "Rainbow of Colors!"
So, we explored colors this week!

These were the read aloud books:

CRAFT: Marble Painting

For this craft I just put tempera paint in little cups.  Then, drop the marble in the cup of the color they want.  Then, I dropped the marble onto their paper on their tray.  They would roll it back and forth until the surface of the marble is clear again.  Then, plop it into another cup of paint.... etc...
I use trash bags as "smocks"  Just cut a hole for their head and arms on the bottom of the trash bag.  With these little guys I use a cloths pin to tighten the bag around their neck/shoulders if needed.
Great activity!  Especially for all those little toddlers who hate to get their fingers dirty. :)

Pom Pom Drop Activity:
I saved up paper towel rolls.  Painted them.  Then used clear packing tape to attach them to a half poster.
They sell a bag of these primary color pom poms at Dollar Tree.  And the little blue buckets are from their too....2/$1.00.  Great activity to practice colors!

Skittle Snack & Sort:
You can find this printable on this website.
My printer was running low on black ink so I uploaded the pic in Paint and added color so I could print these off.
I put the pages in these page protectors.  Had them sort their skittles first, then they ate them!

Our snack was Rainbows! (skittles and marshmallows)

NO MESS Fingerpainting!:
Found this activity via Pinterest!
So fun!
Just gotta watch those fingernails to make sure they don't rip the bag! ;)

Rainbow Craft:
For this craft you will need:
- paper plates
- Cotton balls
- watercolors

So, you just cut the plate in half.  I wrote "R for Rainbow" on them.
Let the kids watercolor them.
Then, we glued the clouds on.
Kids loved it!

Other Activities:
- Put color strips of paper wristbands on the kids.  During circle time, "Jump 2x if you have red."  "Touch your toes if you have yellow" etc...
- Get these color paddles from Oriental Trading.  Show them the new colors.  Or do the above activity but they have a paddle of the color instead of the wristband.
- Get a Twister Game and have them jump to the color dot you call out

Catching Stars Game

Such a fun game!  You can use this to practice colors or review the star shape!  I made up this game for my daughter's 2nd birthday party.  The theme was Dora.  But, I've since used it as a preschool game too when our shape of the week is a star.
Kids love it and want to play again and again. :)

Hide the stars in the backyard, playground, or inside the house.

DOWNLOAD GAME HERE or in Dropbox HERE
I just printed my pages.  Cut out the stars and laminated everything.
Even the sheets.  You can buy star stickers at Wal-mart.  They are only a $1 for 100 stars.
I laminated the sheets too so I only have to peel off the stickers and they can start again.
I've even played this without the sheets, just the stars.

Great color review game too.  Have them tell you the color when they turn them into you or what colors to still look for.  Or print multiple stars and tell one kid they only get the green stars, another kid only gets the pink stars, etc...

Here are some pics of the kids having fun playing catching stars:

Have Fun & Enjoy!

Taste the Rainbow!

Skittles!
Learn your colors sorting and graphing skittles!

I found this site via Pinterest and printed the Skittle Sort & Rainbow Graph!

We used our skittles the Leprechaun brought us on St. Patty's Day for the activity.
{Yes, this was a looong time ago. I just now found these pics on my camera and thought I would share. :)}

Read & Find: Colors

When I would teach reading groups I would like the kids to use different "tools" to find specific words/letters/sounds when reading.  For example, I would use these "Read & Finds" (that's what I call them) when I wanted the kids to find the names of colors in the story.  Some great stories to use with frequent colors are:

I would print these on card-stock, color them, and then cut them out.  I would cut a little window out big enough so the students can fit it over the word they are looking for.  Then, I laminate them for durability.
Download my "Read & Finds: Colors" file for FREE.

It's a great reinforcement activity for the kids!!  And they feel like a detective!
You can also buy these mini colorful magnifying glasses at Oriental Trading.

Colors Sight Word Recognition Test

When your kiddos are preschool/Kinder age they should be able to "read" or actually read the names of the colors.  Back in 2004 I was tutoring a second grader who didn't know his colors and was unable to read them.  So, I made an entire tutoring lesson on colors!  I created a test to use on students to assess their knowledge on reading their colors.  This is a great tool to use if you are teaching preschool!

You can download my test for FREE here: Color Sight Words Recognition Test

There are 2 levels to the test:

Level 1:

Use page 1, the list sheet, to put in front of your student/child.  I use an index card or paper to cover up the ones below so they are focusing on one word at a time.  Just slide down the paper as they go (hope that makes sense).  Then, you as the teacher record their responses on page 2.  Put a check under "sound" if they get it correct and a check under "IR" if it is incorrect.  You can also record the actual word they say in the column too so you know if they are getting their yellow and orange mixed up.
So, this test really tells you if they can recognize their COLORS rather than actually read the word.

Level 2:

Perform this test the same you would do the test above.  However, this test more assesses whether the child can truly read the word without the color being associated with the word.

Learning My Colors! Interactive Color Poster

Teaching colors can be challenging, but it also can be FUN!

When my son, "Johnny Apple", was about 2 years old we would focus on recognizing and saying our colors.
To help increase his exposures to colors and record his progress, I made an interactive poster for in his room.  I just got a regular poster board from the dollar store and drew and colored in the crayons.  Make sure you write the color's name by the crayon to help him recognize it's name as well.  Then, everyday we would do our colors.  I would point to a color and ask him it's name, he would respond "Green" or "Blue"etc.. But, I would also change it up by asking "Where is Purple?" then he would have to point to the color.  Each time he did either correctly I gave him a sticker to put on the crayon or by it.  He LOVED doing this.  I loved it too because I would know, just by looking at the chart, which ones he needed more focus on.
