Come Follow Me February: Why do the choices I make matter? Game

This lesson help goes with the "Come Follow Me" lesson for February's "Why do the choices I make matter?"  I made a game using the resource materials given in the lesson outline.  I divided my class up into teams.  Spaces had questions from scriptures, videos, Strength of Youth: Agency & Accountability, or True to the Faith's Agency.

Materials:

I made a game on some white butcher paper I had.  I traced a Tupperware to make the spaces. I  used a circle punch to punch out different color construction paper for the pieces.  I had a foam dice.  And then this picture of Christ from the Gospel Art Kit.

To make:

Click to enlarge the photos so you can see what I wrote in the spaces.  I just wrote part of scriptures or quotes from Strength of Youth: Agency & Accountability or True the the Faith: Agency.  I would let them look up the scripture.  Or they could use a For the Strength of Youth or True to the Faith printouts/books.

For the videos I used these 2 videos: "Leave the Party" and "A Choice Generation (highlight)"

The lesson outline suggest this one: No Regrets about a boy choosing btwn seminary and surfing.  You could use that video instead of the ones I used.  Just make up questions to go in those spaces.

If the students landed on a "video" space we would watch the video and they would have to answer the question.  The "Leave the Party" one is longer.  So, if  they landed on another question about that movie and we already watched it they could remember the detail.

 What do I do with the picture?

I had it on the side of the chalkboard with the word "Repent" by it.  If the team got the question wrong I sent them to "repent".  :)  In other words they would lose a turn but start back where they were on the game.

Just have categories: Videos, Scriptures, Strength of Youth, True to the Faith, Make a Choice

Then, using the resources have questions from each of these categories on Agency.  "Make a Choice" category you can come up with real life circumstances where they have to make a choice.

"Come Follow Me": September~ Why is it important to be honest?

This post is lesson helps and printable for "Come Follow Me" September's: Why is it important to be honest?  This lesson is a combination of several bullets suggested in the lesson outline.

As my attention-getter we played this game:

I let them look at the items in the pan for 1 minute.  Then, I covered it up and they had to list as many things they could remember in one minute.  HOWEVER, I took a pic of the tray ahead of time with my phone and let one of the YW cheat using the pic.  The other girls didn't know this until AFTER they had to try and list the items.  After finding out who won by writing the most items, I told them we had a cheater.  We talked about why cheating is not fair.

We then filled out this Cause and Effect chart.

They use the Strength of Youth book to write down the 3 things listed that is not honest. Then, we looked up some of the scriptures in the outline that tell the outcome of a dishonest person.  I wanted to stress to them that you should be honest not just because you will be "thrust down to hell" but because it's the RIGHT THING TO DO!  We talked about how you can't have the companionship of the Holy Ghost if you are dishonest with people.  Yes, we talked about repentance too. :)

 LYING:

I used this object lesson when talking about lying with friends.  I explained how you build up a relationship with a friend.  And if you start lying to them then your relationship with crumble.  I had a YW pull a cup out from the "foundation" of the friendship.  We talked about how it's a lot harder to build a relationship back up after you have been dishonest with them.

CHEATING:

Being a past teacher, unfortunately when I taught Middle School I experienced a LOT of cheating. :(  I told the girls how I would just get so frustrated cuz I couldn't trust them that they would keep their eyes on their own paper.  I had to make a TEST A and TEST B.  Have a different Pop Quiz with each class because kids would take pictures of the quiz and send it to friends in other classes.  I told the YW that I would just get so frustrated I wanted to do this to them {showed the above pictures... they thought it was funny}. YOU CAN DOWNLOAD THESE PICS HERE. They responded that you should!  I said I shouldn't have to!  That's the problem! Everyone should have the moral compass inside them to know that it's not ok to cheat. 

PERSONAL STORY: I told them the story about how I had a male student who was very popular.  The girls all thought he was super cute.  He was an athlete.  One day he asked me to complete a teacher recommendation form for student council.  He had 2 older siblings that had once been on student council so he thought for sure he would be selected.  I couldn't check the box that said yes.  It was because he was one of my students that would try to cheat during tests.  I couldn't recommend him as an example to students when I knew he was dishonest.  

PERSONAL STORY:  Another time when I was teaching I wanted to express the importance of honesty with my students.  So, I took the tests home.  Graded them.  Put the student's grades in my gradebook, but did NOT write their score on the tests.  The next day I told the students that they were going to grade their own test and give me their grades. I was saddened to see how many students were dishonest and gave me a higher grade than I knew they earned.  After taking in the grades they said they earned, I told them what I had done. I told them that I had already graded the tests and that the real test was to see who would be honest and give me their actual score. I told them that I knew who the honest ones were and the dishonest students were.  I explained that they needed to always be honest because you never know when your honesty would be tested again.

I also shared these stories from the conference talks: 

Pres. Monson's story of a colleague that used his toes to turn the pages in a book on the floor to cheat

Sister Dibb's story of the father who was stealing corn and his son told him he forgot to look up

Elder Gay's story of  “Son, would you sell your soul for a nickel?” 

I showed the video Honesty: You better believe it

Throughout these we discussed the importance of being honest and what choices we should make to ensure we are women of Integrity.

July Come Follow Me~ What does it mean to take upon myself the name of Jesus Christ?

At the beginning of my lesson I was going to show a picture of my Great Grandmother Lucelle Eliza Taylor.  My middle name is Lucelle because I was named after her.  I will share with them a little history about her- she served on the General Primary Board.  Her husband was Vice President of BYU working along side President Wilkinson.  She was a magnificent woman who had served a lot in the church.  

Then, I will share the first 3 paragraphs of Elder Arnold's talk: What Have You Done with My Name?

I will then explain the name tags as we read D&C 20:37, 77

I will explain that when we made a covenant with God that we are willing to take upon us the name of Christ, it is like we are willing to wear his "name tag" with us always. 

We will then do this bullet from the Come Follow Me lesson:

• Read as a class the last two paragraphs of the talk ("What Have You Done with My Name?"), and invite the young women discuss how they will apply Elder Arnold’s challenge.

May~ Why is it important to study the scriptures?

These handouts go along with the lesson from May "Why is it important to study the scriptures?"

This printable goes along with this part of the lesson:

• Ask each young woman to read one of the scriptures suggested in this outline. Ask her to draw a picture that represents what her scripture teaches, and invite the rest of the class to guess what the scripture says about the importance of scripture study. What experiences can the young women share in which they have seen the importance of scripture study in their own lives?

 I was going to have the girls draw a scripture out of a hat and then they have to illustrate the scripture on on page of their Come Follow Me INB and tell about it on the other page.

Then, I will partner them up with someone.  They will show their partner their illustration. (see below) and will have their page with their description facing them without their partner seeing.

Their partner will have to try and guess what the scripture is saying by looking at the picture.

Then, I will have the girls write a question they may have on a piece of paper.  For example: How do I know when I have been forgiven?, How do I know I am a Daughter of God?, How do I know Heavenly Father answers prayers? etc....

Girls will crumble them up into a ball and throw it into the center of the class.  Like "snowballs".  The girls when then pic up a "snowball'/someone else's question.  They will write the question on this handout below.  Then, they will find scriptures to answer that YW's question.

While the girls are looking for scriptures, I will post the questions on the board.  Then, when the girl's have a scripture(s) to answer the question they will post it on the board next to the question. 

Girls can write the questions and scripture references for all the girls (from the board) in the grid below to use for future reference.

"Come Follow Me" November: Why is it important for me to gain an education and develop skills?

We call these "Thinking Maps" in teaching.  This is using the Cause & Effect Flow Chart.

I used this with the "Come Follow Me" November Lesson: Why is it important for me to gain an education and develop skills?

I used this bullet from the lesson:

• Assign the young women to read individually one of the five paragraphs from the “Education” section of For the Strength of Youth or the statements by President Gordon B. Hinckley and President Thomas S. Monson at the beginning of the talk “Seek Learning: You Have a Work to Do.” Ask them to explain to the class what they read, and discuss why it is important to work diligently now to gain a good education. Invite the young women to think about and share their goals to gain an education.

We used scriptures from the lesson to discuss what causes us to have an education and what effects we can have because we have an education.  

I divided the class into pairs.  {we had an even 12 girls today..yay!}

Each pair was given a box.  I had drawn the flow chart up on the chalkboard in the classroom.  I drew the middle box and arrows.  Where the 3 boxes for "causes" and 3 boxes for "effects" are I had a piece of tape ready for the girls to tape up their paper summarizing their assignment scriptures or readings.

Each group was given a blank piece of paper to summarize what "cause" or "effect" they learned from their reading.  They then put it up on the board.  We went over it as a class and they copied it down on their papers.

The two empty boxes on either side can be used for whatever readings you wanted to use.  On the "cause" side I used the quote I pulled from Sister Cook's talk (see page 3 below).  On the "effects" side I used the "Education" section from the "For the Strength of Youth" book. (see page 2 below)

As a conclusion I had the girls ponder the questions and write their answers at the bottom on p.3.  Just getting them thinking of what type of career they would like to pursue.

"Come Follow Me" November: Self- Reliance

These activities are to be used with the "Come Follow Me" November: Self-Reliance lesson.

I used the below activity to go with this point from the "What does it mean to be self-reliant?" lesson:

• Write on separate slips of paper the following topics related to self-reliance: health, education, employment, home storage, finances, and spiritual strength. Allow each young woman to pick one that she is interested in, and invite her to read about her topic in a copy of section 6.1.1 ofHandbook 2 (pages 34–35). Ask each young woman to briefly teach the class what she learned about her topic, how it relates to self-reliance, and what she can do now to prepare to be self-reliant in the area. How can the young women’s efforts in their youth bless their own futures? How can these efforts bless their families when they become wives and mothers?

We played like a Taboo game.  I had these papers folded up in my Self-Reliant First Aid Kit I brought.  I called on a girl.  She came to the front and pick one out of the kit.  She tried to get her classmates to say the large underline word WITHOUT using the word or the words listed below to describe it.  They had fun doing this.  Then, after they guessed it.  We read the excerpt from the Handbook {see above for link}.  The girls would write "Health" in box 1 on page 1 above.  Then, as we would read the excerpt, they would list things they needed to do to improve in this category.  This was a lot of fun!

Then, after playing this "game" to go over the 6 categories of being more self reliant.  We talked about the parable of Talents.  I then randomly gave each girl an envelope with coins in them.  Some had 1, others had 2, and others had 5.  They then needed to list 1, 2, or 5 talents they have that will help them be more self-reliant.  Whether it be a skill or personality trait they had.  I challenged them to strengthen this talent during the week, and not "bury" it.

This activity above goes with this bullet from November's "What does it mean to be self-reliant?":

• Give each young woman either five coins, two coins, or one coin. I used the below activity to go with this point from the "What does it mean to be self-reliant?" lesson:

• Write on separate slips of paper the following topics related to self-reliance: health, education, employment, home storage, finances, and spiritual strength. Allow each young woman to pick one that she is interested in, and invite her to read about her topic in a copy of section 6.1.1 ofHandbook 2 (pages 34–35). Ask each young woman to briefly teach the class what she learned about her topic, how it relates to self-reliance, and what she can do now to prepare to be self-reliant in the area. How can the young women’s efforts in their youth bless their own futures? How can these efforts bless their families when they become wives and mothers?

We played like a Taboo game.  I had these papers folded up in my Self-Reliant First Aid Kit I brought.  I called on a girl.  She came to the front and pick one out of the kit.  She tried to get her classmates to say the large underline word WITHOUT using the word or the words listed below to describe it.  They had fun doing this.  Then, after they guessed it.  We read the excerpt from the Handbook {see above for link}.  The girls would write "Health" in box 1 on page 1 above.  Then, as we would read the excerpt, they would list things they needed to do to improve in this category.  This was a lot of fun!

Then, after playing this "game" to go over the 6 categories of being more self reliant.  We talked about the parable of Talents.  I then randomly gave each girl an envelope with coins in them.  Some had 1, others had 2, and others had 5.  They then needed to list 1, 2, or 5 talents they have that will help them be more self-reliant.  Whether it be a skill or personality trait they had.  I challenged them to strengthen this talent during the week, and not "bury" it.

I made this Cause and Effect Flow Chart to help the YW visualize what they need to do to have a proper fast.  They can also see what effects or blessings they can have in their lives by participating in a proper fast.

"Come Follow Me" September: Tithing

This handout/worksheet for the lesson goes with:

• Draw three columns on the chalkboard with the following headings: Blessings, How Funds Are Used, and Attitude. Divide the class into small groups, and assign each group one of the topics to research in the section titled “Tithes and Offerings” in For the Strength of Youth. Ask the young women to write what they find in the appropriate column on the board. Invite a few of them to share their testimonies of the law of tithing.

Whenever I give a lesson on Tithing, I get pretty emotional.  And you will see why.  I will share with you my own personal experience I have had with Tithing.  While I attended college I had to pay every penny of my own education.  I worked hard to get scholarships when I was in High School because I knew my family didn't have the means to help with my education.  So, if I wanted a college degree, I was going to have to do it on my own.  So, while going through the Elementary Education program at ASU I worked full time as a Service Cashier at a car dealership.  I worked and went to school full time.  At one point I even took 18 credit units and worked full time.  It was tough.  Well, I was on the delayed payment program at ASU.  This allows you to make payments for your education.  Well, one year it came time to make my final payment for that semester of college.  I didn't have enough for both my tithing and the final amount that I needed to pay.  I was torn at what I should do.  Should I drop out of college and pay my tithing?  Or just pay college and owe on my tithing?  Well, of course I knew what was the correct thing to do.  So, I paid my tithing with faith that the Lord would provide a way for me to stay in school.  Well, not 2 days later.  My sweet Grandma called me to ask how I was doing.  She wanted to know how work and school was.  {I also had to move back home during this time to help with my family since my mom was battling breast cancer at the time}.  Then, she proceeded to tell me that she had $1,000 she wanted to give me to help towards my education.  I will never forget the feeling I got.  It was an overflow of warmth and love.  I knew that Heavenly Father was aware of me and my needs.  I knew this was a blessing being poured out to me from heaven.  

A blessing as a result of my faith.

(This story is very similar to this one Pres. Hinckley shared of a Brazil student.  This talk is one of the suggested material found in the lesson)

Come Follow Me: August "Why is Chastity Important?"

These handouts go with the lesson from "Come Follow Me" August: "Why is Chastity Important?"

I encourage you to prayerfully consider and ponder the points from this lesson that are age-appropriate and towards the needs of your Young Women.  This is definitely a "loaded" question and very important question to cover with the youth of today.  I feel Satan and his followers are working double time to get to the youth of today, and unfortunately it's through this avenue of Chastity that many of our youth take off their armor of God.

I was going to use the above worksheet {King David vs. Joseph} to compare the difference of someone who chose to be chaste and another who gave into temptation.

The videos the church provides for your youth on this subject are awesome.  If you're feeling uncomfortable teaching this topic, instead of skipping it {since this is an important topic to discuss with our youth today} let the videos do the teaching and use these worksheets for the YW to fill out as they watch.  I pulled these questions from the lesson outline.
